Amusement Ride Regulations
For any public event in Illinois:
- Permit Requirement: Operators must have a permit from the Illinois Department of Labor. Operating without one can lead to a Class A misdemeanor, with each day counting as a separate offense.
- Inspection Requirement: All rides and attractions open to the public must undergo initial and annual inspections.
- Application Packet: The permit process includes submitting an application, and rides must display a decal after approval.
- Operator Qualifications: Documentation for criminal background checks, sex offender registry checks, training, and a substance abuse policy (including random drug testing) for all staff involved in ride operations is required.
Reporting Unpermitted Rides
If a ride operates without the required permit, contact local law enforcement and the Illinois Department of Labor at 217-782-9347.
